She Filled a Thrift-Store Tray With Leftover Halloween Decorations: Now It Looks Like a Designer Centerpiece

Weathered wood, two round shelves, and a black metal handle gave this tiered tray the appearance of an old farmhouse serving piece. Its distressed finish had character, but both levels sat empty on the kitchen island, with no seasonal decorations in place.

Lori of Dining Delight used the wooden stand to bring together Halloween decorations from her collection, combining velvet pumpkins, black spiders, ceramic mugs, glowing jack-o’-lanterns, and autumn branches into one centerpiece.

Orange and black objects now fill both tiers, while a bat and hanging sign rise above the handle. The transformation comes from the placement of objects with different heights, textures, and shapes, rather than any change to the wooden tray.

The original stand has a broad lower tray, a smaller upper shelf, and a turned spindle with an oval metal handle. Scratches and pale marks cover the dark wood, giving the rims a worn finish that remains visible after decorating.

Its upper platform leaves room for compact ornaments, while the wider base can support mugs, pumpkins, and other pieces that need more space. Both shelves have raised edges, keeping the objects within the round wooden borders.

Black bat wings extend above the metal handle, with a wooden “Let’s Hang Out” sign suspended beneath them. The sign features hanging bats and dark lettering against a tan background, placing a Halloween detail at the highest point of the arrangement.

A black spider sits against a white mug filled with berry stems, while a rat rests on an orange velvet pumpkin to the left. Gold glitter pumpkins occupy the front edge, leaving the sign visible between the taller decorations.

White mugs printed with a black cat and an owl hold stems covered in orange berries and green-brown leaves. The mugs sit on opposite sides of the lower tier, with branches extending beyond the rim to increase the arrangement’s width.

Between them, an amber jack-o’-lantern lantern rests on a brown base beside a flat black cat ornament wearing a plaid bow. The mugs provide pale surfaces among the darker decorations, while the branches connect the objects across the tray.

An orange velvet pumpkin occupies the center of the lower shelf, with a large black spider stretched across its top. Two gold glitter pumpkins sit along the front rim, while a small black rat rests in a white dish beside the glowing lantern.

The pumpkin’s ribbed fabric contrasts with the glass lantern and rough wooden edge. Its size fills the space beneath the upper tier without extending past the surrounding mugs and foliage.

The reverse view reveals a white “Trick or Treat” mug with a pumpkin illustration, another amber lantern, and a black rat positioned near the front. A black spider climbs the side of the upper mug, while a second rat extends over the foliage at the right.

Orange pumpkins sit at different heights, from the lower rim to the upper shelf. The hanging sign remains visible above them, allowing the centerpiece to be viewed from either side of the kitchen island.

The upper-tier close-up shows the bat silhouette, wooden sign, and spider arranged among berries and glitter pumpkins. A black rat sits behind the sign, with its tail curving toward the orange velvet pumpkin.

These figures introduce Halloween shapes without covering the autumn foliage. The dark ornaments remain distinct against the tan sign, white mug, and gold pumpkin surfaces.

The completed tray stands on a marble-look island in front of white kitchen cabinets, subway tile, and a wide window above the sink. Orange branches extend past the upper shelf, while the black bat rises above the arrangement against the pale cabinetry.

An orange-and-black folded towel sits beside the base, with the rest of the countertop left open. The dark wood and Halloween colors create a focal point without requiring decorations across the surrounding kitchen surfaces.

The empty stand offered two wooden platforms and a central handle. Once decorated, the lower shelf holds the larger pumpkins and ceramic pieces, while the upper tier carries the hanging sign, smaller ornaments, and glowing glass lantern.

The wooden structure remains intact beneath the arrangement, with its distressed finish visible around the edges. Removing the Halloween objects would leave the same tray available for another seasonal display.
