23 of the best minimalist blankets & throws for autumn & winter cosiness

It may still be officially summer (just), but after months of heat the weather here in the UK has suddenly turned autumnal and I’m starting to look forward to cosy season – that wonderful time of frosty mornings, fireside cuppas, candlelit evenings and crunching over fallen leaves on long woodland walks.
With that in mind, I’ve picked out 23 beautiful blankets and throws to keep you warm – and your home looking beautiful – over the chilly autumn and winter months ahead. All have the kind of timeless, pared-back style that will endure for years to come, with a mix of calming neutral colours, earthy nature-inspired hues and, in some cases, checks and stripes that add a subtle hint of pattern. I’ve included a range of price points and sizes, and I’ve also listed what each blanket and throw is made of. There are options woven from snuggly merino and mohair, super-smooth lambswool, laid-back linen, organic cotton and sustainable bamboo, as well as several designs crafted from alpaca wool – a soft, lightweight choice that’s ideal for those with an allergy to the lanolin found in sheep’s wool. Perfect for draping over sofas and armchairs, curling up with a book on a chilly evening or adding an extra layer to your bed as the nighttime temperatures start to drop.

From the above selection, I want to highlight three small, independent brands whose blankets and throws I’m a particular fan of. The first is Elvang, a Danish company founded by husband-and-wife team Tina and Lasse Elvang. They fuse understated Nordic aesthetics with Peruvian craftsmanship, offering a range of responsibly produced textiles woven from alpaca wool at artisan mills in the Andes. I have their ‘Tartan’ throw and two of their scarves, and I’ve also seen several of their other designs – including collaborations with renowned designers Cecilie Manz and Inga Sempé – at 3 Days of Design. All are gorgeous in both look and feel, and well worth investing in.

The second is British Blanket Company, which is the brainchild of brother and sister Bethan and Joe. Its timeless collections are designed in my own city of Bristol and woven from pure wool at traditional mills around the British Isles. They include versatile classics such as the ‘Clifton’ herringbone blanket, which I have in my home (below), and many of the colourways were inspired by the landscapes and architecture of the West Country. They’ve also recently added alpaca-wool options to their range, along with a selection of blankets made from leftover and recycled yarns.

Finally, Netherlands-based Forestry Wool has a considered range of blankets crafted in Europe from sustainability sourced New Zealand wool. Its gorgeous designs take their cue from the beauty of the natural world, with flowing curves, striking blocks of colour and a palette that encompasses earthy pinks and ochres, leafy greens and stone-like greys and browns. I have two of them, including the two-tone ‘Earth Sand’ blanket pictured below, and I love the minimalist aesthetic. They’re also luxuriously thick without being overly heavy, which is a rare balance to find.
