She Turned Wire Fencing Into an Entryway Bench

Need a place to sit while putting on shoes without adding another bulky piece of furniture to the entryway? Many entryways rely on narrow console tables that look nice but do very little to manage everyday clutter. Shoes collect near the door, seating remains limited, and the space starts feeling less organized as the week goes on.

This project, created by Brittney Smart, started with exactly that problem.

The entryway had a slim console table, a separate chair, and shoes scattered across the floor. Instead of adding more storage pieces, she replaced the console with a handmade bench that combined seating and organization in one footprint.

The change did more than create a place to sit.

It turned a cluttered entryway into a space where shoes had a dedicated home, seating moved closer to the door, and the entire area felt more organized without adding visual bulk.

Basic Lumber Created The New Structure

The replacement started with simple dimensional lumber.

A few boards formed the top, sides, and structure of the bench. At this stage, the materials looked no different from a standard woodworking project.

Nothing suggested the finished piece would include wire fencing as one of its defining features.

The transformation had not started yet.

Pocket Holes And Wood Glue Built The Structure

The bench came together with a combination of pocket-hole joinery and wood glue.

After measuring the boards, pocket holes connected the long top boards to the side panels, creating a strong frame without visible fasteners across the outside surfaces. Wood glue reinforced each joint and helped turn several individual boards into a single structure.

Clamps held everything in place while the glue cured, allowing the waterfall shape to come together from a surprisingly small number of pieces.

At this stage, the project already looked more like furniture than construction lumber. The clean lines and simple proportions gave the bench a custom-built appearance long before stain, storage compartments, or finishing details entered the picture.

The Waterfall Shape Added More Presence

After assembly, the side panels extended directly to the floor, creating a waterfall appearance where the top flowed into the sides as one continuous form.

That shape gave the bench more visual presence than the narrow table it replaced.

The larger footprint also created valuable storage space underneath.

Sanding Turned Construction Lumber Into Furniture

Before assembly moved forward, the boards received a full sanding.

That step softened rough edges and prepared the surface for stain. The grain pattern became more visible and the lumber started looking less like building material.

The bench already carried a custom-built appearance before the storage section appeared.

Wire Fencing Became Shoe Storage

This is where the project changed direction.

Most people see wire fencing and think about gardens, outdoor projects, or animal enclosures. Brittney saw entryway storage.

Instead of building shelves or cubbies from wood, she cut sections of fencing that would become the organizational core of the bench.

The material still looked industrial, but its purpose had already changed.

Folding The Wire Created Individual Compartments

Once folded and connected together, the fencing stopped behaving like fencing.

The wire formed separate compartments sized for shoes and boots while maintaining an open appearance beneath the bench. Each section helped keep footwear organized instead of piling together on the floor.

The structure also allowed everything to remain visible and accessible.

That openness became one of the strongest parts of the design.

The Contrast Between Wood And Wire Changed Everything

After the wire insert slid beneath the bench, the entire project found its identity.

The stained wood introduced warmth while the exposed metal added texture and contrast. Neither material competed with the other.

Instead, the combination created a piece that felt industrial without feeling cold.

The fencing no longer looked like outdoor hardware. It looked like part of a custom furniture design.

What Changed After

The entryway stopped depending on separate pieces to perform different jobs.

The bench provided seating, shoe storage, and organization in one footprint. Shoes moved off the floor and into dedicated compartments while the top surface offered a comfortable place to sit when putting shoes on or taking them off.

The open wire storage kept the entryway from feeling crowded the way baskets, cabinets, or enclosed cubbies often do. Instead of hiding the storage system, the bench made it part of the design. The exposed wire introduced texture, contrast, and industrial character while keeping shoes organized and easy to access.
