Laundry Rooms Started Taking Over the Utility Closet
Laundry room remodels often stop after new paint or replacement cabinets. Reddit user u/Boobslappy decided the room needed to solve storage problems at the same time. Existing oak cabinets stayed in place but received new paint and hardware, while the utility closet became custom built-ins for cleaning supplies, a vacuum garage, cat litter storage, and household essentials.
Instead of making the room larger, the project reorganized every existing inch. Pink laminate countertops disappeared, the washer hookups moved lower, laundry basket cubbies were built into the base cabinets, and a GE all-in-one washer and dryer made it possible to keep every upper cabinet without sacrificing storage.
Original Oak Cabinets Set the Starting Point
The laundry room began with solid oak cabinets, laminate countertops, and a built-in sink that had served the house for years. Although the layout already offered generous upper storage, the finishes dated the room and the lower cabinets lacked the organization needed for daily use.
The washer and dryer occupied one end of the room while a large utility closet sat across from them. Rather than removing walls or changing the footprint, the homeowner planned to improve how both spaces worked together.
Utility Closet Offered Untapped Storage
The utility closet relied on standard wire shelving that left much of the available volume unused. Cleaning supplies, household products, and storage bins competed for space while larger equipment had no dedicated location.
Instead of treating the closet as a separate room, the remodel turned it into an extension of the laundry area with custom cabinetry designed around the family’s storage needs.
Cabinet Doors Received a New Finish
The original oak cabinet boxes remained in place while the doors received fresh paint and updated black hardware. Keeping the existing cabinets avoided unnecessary demolition while changing the appearance of the entire wall.
New under-cabinet lighting also became part of the upgrade, adding task lighting across the countertop instead of relying only on the ceiling fixture.
Countertop Layout Added Better Function
New cabinet fronts and a redesigned countertop changed how this side of the room works. The larger counter creates more space for folding laundry while the open cabinet frames allowed plumbing updates before the final installation.
Replacing two appliances with one all-in-one washer and dryer also freed space without removing the upper cabinets.
Sink and Folding Area Shared One Counter
A continuous quartz countertop now stretches across the cabinet run, combining the sink with a large folding surface instead of separating each function. Under-cabinet lighting keeps the entire workspace bright without casting shadows from the upper cabinets.
The homeowner also replaced the ceiling fixture with a modern design that spreads light across the narrow room.
Utility Closet Became Built-In Storage
The former wire shelving disappeared behind a wall of custom built-ins sized for household supplies. Open cubbies hold clear storage bins, woven baskets, paper products, detergents, and pet supplies while keeping everything visible and easy to reach.
Instead of one large open closet, the space now divides supplies into dedicated sections that prevent everyday clutter from spreading into the laundry room.
Laundry Baskets Moved Into the Cabinets
Open cubbies below the countertop hold four laundry baskets, giving each load its own location without taking up floor space. Keeping the baskets inside the cabinetry also leaves the walkway open between the washer and storage wall.
Inside the sink cabinet, plumbing remains accessible while the surrounding compartments provide useful storage instead of wasted empty space.
Cleaning Tools Received Their Own Station
One section of the former utility closet became vertical storage for vacuums, mops, and other tall cleaning tools. Wall hooks keep everything upright and easy to remove while shelves above store attachments and accessories.
Creating one dedicated cleaning station prevents bulky equipment from moving between closets throughout the house.
Open Shelves Organize Everyday Supplies
The custom shelving combines open compartments with woven baskets and clear containers sized for different products. Paper towels, detergents, cleaning wipes, pet supplies, and refill products each occupy their own section instead of sharing large shelves.
Clear bins also make inventory easier because supplies remain visible without pulling everything off the shelf.
Closet and Cabinet Updates Changed the Entire Room
The comparison shows that the biggest difference comes from how every surface now works together. On one side, an empty closet became a complete storage wall. On the other, the original oak cabinets evolved into a brighter workspace with integrated lighting, a continuous countertop, and a cleaner layout built around everyday routines.
Rather than treating the closet and laundry room as separate projects, the remodel connects both into one functional space. Storage, folding, washing, and cleaning now happen within the same compact footprint, giving the room a purpose far beyond laundry alone.
