He Replaced a Metal Storage Rack With a Built-In Pantry

Metal storage racks often become the default pantry solution when a kitchen lacks dedicated food storage. Small appliances, cookbooks, pet supplies, snacks, and boxed foods end up stacked on open shelves that remain visible from the dining area.

Shared on Imgur by docholliday316, this project replaced a freestanding wire rack with a pantry built directly into the kitchen. Lumber framing, drywall, custom shelving, trim, and double doors converted an unused section of wall into enclosed storage designed for everyday pantry items.

The finished pantry occupies the same corner as the original rack but provides full-height shelving, concealed storage, and a cleaner kitchen layout without expanding the room.

Before construction began, pantry items occupied a freestanding wire shelving unit positioned beside the kitchen counter.

The rack provided storage but left everything exposed. Cookbooks, food containers, pet supplies, and small appliances competed for space while contributing to visual clutter in a relatively small kitchen.

The area beside the counter contained no cabinets, storage, or built-in features despite occupying a noticeable amount of floor space.

Rather than continuing to rely on open shelving, the homeowner used this section of the kitchen to build a full-height pantry that would later hide food storage behind closed doors.

The pantry began taking shape once the wall framing was installed. Studs defined the side walls, doorway opening, and overall depth of the structure.

Compared to the empty wall, the new framework made it clear how much storage space could be created without extending beyond the existing kitchen layout.

Sheets of drywall covered the exposed framing and gave the new pantry the appearance of a permanent part of the kitchen rather than a standalone structure.

The doorway opening remained visible, but the surrounding walls now matched the rest of the room. With the framing hidden behind drywall, the project shifted from rough construction to finishing work.

Joint compound was applied across drywall seams, corners, and fastener locations to create a continuous surface across the new pantry walls.

At this stage, the structure still showed signs of construction, but the framing and drywall panels had begun to read as a single built-in feature. Once sanded and painted, the pantry would blend with the surrounding kitchen walls.

Particle Board Was Cut Into Custom Shelves

Shelf components were cut from two sheets of 3/4-inch particle board, creating custom-sized pieces that matched the dimensions of the new pantry.

Construction adhesive, staples, and finish nails secured the shelving components to the supports and wall framing. Building the shelves on site allowed the homeowner to maximize every inch of the pantry rather than relying on standard shelf sizes.

Shelf Supports Established the Storage Layout

Horizontal cleats were installed across the back wall and sides of the pantry to support the future shelves. Their spacing determined the height of each storage section before any shelving material was installed.

Additional support pieces were cut from particle board and beveled along the lower edge to create a cleaner transition beneath the shelves. With the supports in place, the final storage layout became visible and the pantry started taking shape from the inside out.

Shelves Were Built to Fit the Space Exactly

Pre-primed and painted shelves were installed once the support structure was complete. During installation, the builder discovered that the exterior wall was not perfectly straight, requiring adjustments to the shelf edges so they would fit tightly against the wall.

Heavy-duty staples secured the shelves to the support cleats, while additional brackets were installed beneath the upper shelf for reinforcement. The custom fit allowed the shelving to span the full width of the pantry, maximizing storage capacity without leaving unusable gaps along the walls.

Double Doors Turned the Pantry Into a Finished Feature

Pre-hung double doors enclosed the new pantry and transformed the project from a construction zone into a built-in feature that matched the surrounding kitchen. Careful framing allowed enough clearance for door casings and trim, helping the finished opening fit correctly on the first installation.

The doors and trim were painted before installation, creating a cleaner finish and reducing touch-up work later. Once opened, the doors reveal full-width shelving sized for appliances, dry goods, cookware, and pantry staples. When closed, the pantry blends into the wall and hides the visual clutter that previously occupied the corner, replacing an exposed storage rack with storage that looks integrated into the original design of the room.

Pantry Added Storage Without Expanding the Kitchen

Enclosed Pantry Freed Up Kitchen Space
@docholliday316

The original wire rack stored pantry items vertically, but much of the wall behind it remained unused. Building a dedicated pantry allowed the homeowner to use the full height and depth of the available space.

Large appliances now occupy upper shelves, everyday food items remain organized at eye level, and bulk supplies can be stored below. The project converted one section of open storage into a purpose-built pantry while keeping the kitchen footprint unchanged.
