Three Leftover Cabinets Turned a Storage Pantry Into a Butler’s Pantry
Kitchen remodels often leave behind materials that no longer fit the new design. After completing a kitchen renovation, Reddit user u/minutemaid101 found himself with three extra cabinets and an overcrowded pantry filled with wire shelving.
Instead of storing the cabinets in a garage or selling them, he used them as the starting point for a complete pantry rebuild. Floating butcher-block shelves, quartz surfaces, integrated lighting, and custom storage transformed the room into a butler’s pantry designed for food preparation, small appliances, and organized storage.
The finished pantry bears little resemblance to the crowded storage room that existed before construction began.
Traditional Wire Shelves Filled Every Wall
Wire shelving wrapped around the perimeter of the room and held dry goods, paper products, baking ingredients, and snacks.
Storage capacity existed, but the pantry lacked dedicated work surfaces, appliance space, and organization systems that made ingredients easier to access during cooking.
IKEA Shelving Introduced Illuminated Pantry Storage
An IKEA KALLAX shelving unit was incorporated into the layout and painted to match the surrounding cabinetry. Positioned between the base cabinets, the open cubbies created storage for baskets, containers, and pantry staples while filling a section that standard cabinets would have left unused.
Integrated LED lighting turned the IKEA shelving into a display feature rather than a standard storage unit. Light inside each compartment highlights pantry items, adds depth to the narrow room, and helps connect the open shelving with the custom cabinetry installed throughout the space.
Leftover Cabinets and a Microwave Tower Established the New Layout
Three surplus kitchen cabinets from a previous remodel became the starting point for the pantry conversion. Positioned along two walls, the cabinets introduced enclosed storage beneath future work surfaces and transformed part of the room from simple food storage into a dedicated prep area.
A tall cabinet installed above the microwave turned one end of the pantry into an appliance station. Moving the microwave out of the main kitchen freed up counter space elsewhere while adding extra cabinet storage above. Together, the base cabinets, illuminated shelving, and microwave tower established the framework that guided the rest of the build.
Wood cleats were fastened directly to the walls before the shelves were installed. Routed channels on the back of each shelf allowed them to slide over the supports, hiding the structure from view.
Countertops Unified the Pantry Layout
Countertop sections linked the cabinets and shelving unit into a continuous work surface.
The addition introduced dedicated prep space while preserving easy access to the illuminated cubbies below.
Floating Shelves Combined Hidden Supports and Integrated Lighting
Floating shelves were built from butcher block and routed on the back to fit over the concealed wall cleats. The recessed channel allowed each shelf to slide onto the support strips and remain free of visible brackets.
A groove was cut into the underside of the shelves to conceal LED strip lighting. Once installed, the lights washed across the countertops and open storage, highlighting the dark wood shelves and giving the pantry the appearance of custom millwork rather than standard storage.
Quartz Surfaces Replaced Temporary Worktops
Temporary plywood surfaces gave way to quartz countertops and matching quartz wall panels. Extending the material across both the worktop and backsplash reduced visual interruptions and created a cleaner workspace around the microwave station and floating shelves.
Pantry Items Returned in Organized Zones
Glass canisters, wire baskets, drawers, cabinets, and open shelving brought structure back to the room. Dry goods, baking supplies, paper products, and everyday pantry items each received dedicated storage areas instead of sharing crowded wire shelves.
Finished Pantry Functions as a Butler’s Pantry
Gray shaker cabinets, walnut-toned floating shelves, integrated LED lighting, quartz surfaces, and a built-in microwave transformed the pantry into a compact butler’s pantry. Prep space, appliance storage, and organized shelving now occupy the same footprint that once held basic wire shelving.
The finished room functions as more than a pantry. Three leftover cabinets became the starting point for a workspace designed for food preparation, small appliances, and everyday storage, turning a standard pantry into one of the hardest-working areas in the home.
