This IKEA Bath Mat Ended Up Looking Like Designer Wall Art
Bath mats belong on the floor, not inside picture frames. Instagram creator @b__living found another use for IKEA’s BACKMÅRA bath mat by cutting it into organic shapes and arranging the pieces across two large canvases to create textured wall art.

Soft pile normally designed for bare feet became raised abstract patterns inspired by modern tufted artwork. Canvas, oak frames, paint, and hot glue completed the project, producing a pair of oversized wall pieces that look more like designer gallery art than a repurposed bathroom accessory.
IKEA Bath Mat Started the Project

BACKMÅRA bath mat supplied the textured material used throughout the project. Dense pile and neutral brown color already resembled the soft surfaces found in many modern textile artworks.
Single bath mat became the foundation for both framed pieces without requiring specialty fabrics or tufting equipment.
Canvas Received a Painted Background

Masking tape protected the outer edges of each canvas while paint covered the center surface with a warm neutral shade. Clean borders framed the artwork before any textured elements were added.
Painted background created contrast against the darker rug pieces and established the finished color palette.
Organic Shapes Were Drawn and Cut

Flowing lines were first sketched onto cardboard to create reusable templates. Templates were transferred onto the back of the bath mat before each section was cut out.
Irregular curves replaced geometric shapes, giving the finished artwork a softer and more natural appearance.
Rug Pieces Formed Two Different Designs

Cut sections were arranged across two canvases instead of one. Alternating the pieces created different compositions while maintaining the same visual language between both artworks.
Hot glue secured each section in place, leaving narrow painted spaces visible between the raised shapes.
Oak Frames Completed the Artwork

Finished canvases were placed inside oak floating frames that concealed the edges and introduced another natural material into the design.
Wood tones complemented the brown textured surfaces while giving each piece a finished gallery-style appearance.
Textured Panels Finished the Wall Display

Soft raised forms stand out against the smooth painted background, creating depth without relying on color or printed artwork. Matching compositions establish balance while each panel remains distinct.

Framed pair introduces texture instead of printed artwork, turning a simple bath mat into oversized wall decor. Would you hang these IKEA wall panels in your home?
