They Turned a Dark Storage Room Into a Dedicated Laundry Room
Storage rooms often become places where boxes, tools, seasonal decorations, and household supplies accumulate over time, leaving valuable square footage dedicated to items that are rarely used. Behind the shelving and storage bins, however, many of these spaces already contain everything needed for a more practical purpose.

Existing square footage provided enough room for a complete laundry setup, making it possible to bring the washer and dryer inside the house without sacrificing living space elsewhere.
New plumbing, tile flooring, shiplap walls, built-in storage, updated lighting, and a custom pine folding station gradually transformed the room from a storage area into a dedicated laundry space. What had previously been one of the least-used rooms in the home became a space designed around a task the family uses every day.
Storage Room Relied on One Oversized Shelving Unit
The room began as a narrow storage space with a large dark-wood shelving unit occupying nearly the entire right side. Bags, tools, and household supplies filled the shelves while boxes and miscellaneous items occupied much of the remaining space.
Storage defined the room’s purpose. Nearly every improvement that followed started with removing the oversized shelving unit and finding a better use for the square footage already available.
Shelves Were Packed With Boxes and Household Items
A closer view revealed how heavily the shelving system was being used. Cardboard moving boxes lined the shelves while additional boxes occupied the floor beneath.
The room functioned as a catch-all storage area rather than a finished part of the house, despite having enough space to support a more practical purpose.
Tile Flooring and New Plumbing Prepared the Room for Laundry
The lower shelving was removed and new tile flooring was installed throughout the room. For a short time, the space even served as a room for the family’s dogs while plans for the laundry conversion took shape.
Once the project moved forward, a contractor was brought in to install the plumbing. The wall shared with a nearby wet bar provided an existing water source, allowing the new laundry connections to be added without running completely new plumbing lines. After the utility work was finished, the walls could be closed up and prepared for the next stage of the renovation.
Laundry Finally Moved Inside the House
With the plumbing complete, the washer and dryer were installed in their new location. After years of handling laundry in the garage, the storage room was now functioning as a dedicated laundry space.
The room still lacked the finishes and details planned for the final design, but the most important goal had already been achieved. Laundry was finally inside the house.
Shiplap Replaced the Patched Drywall
Horizontal wall panels replaced the patched drywall and immediately changed the appearance of the room. New ceiling lights brightened the narrow space while wood supports were installed along both side walls for the future countertop.
With the walls complete and the appliances already in place, the laundry room finally began looking like part of the house rather than an active construction zone.
Custom-Milled Pine Became the Room’s Folding Station
Shiplap covered the walls, new lighting brightened the room, and a custom pine countertop stretched from wall to wall above the washer and dryer. The countertop was built by a friend using pine milled from a felled tree and joined into a single slab.
After conditioning the wood, a light semi-transparent stain highlighted the grain while preserving its natural appearance. The finished surface created a dedicated folding station and added functionality that the original storage room never had.
Final Details Completed the Laundry Room
Floating shelf, brass wall sconces, and a narrow storage unit between the washer and dryer completed the final phase of the project. The center cubby filled what would have been wasted space while providing room for baskets and laundry supplies.
Framed artwork, woven textures, and the custom pine countertop helped the room feel less like a utility area and more like a finished part of the home. What started as a dark storage closet had become the dedicated laundry room the homeowners envisioned from the beginning.
