She Painted the Builder-Grade Vanity Barberry and Changed the Entire Bathroom
Jessica from FromGrittoPearl didn’t begin this bathroom makeover with demolition or expensive replacements. Looking for ways to update the builder-grade space, she started by turning the white grout lines black, a simple project that quickly changed the appearance of the tile.

That first update led to a much larger transformation. The chrome shower frame received a black finish, the gray vanity became a bold pink focal point, and new mirrors, faucets, hardware, floating shelves, and propagation planters gradually replaced many of the original details.
The layout never changed, but the finished bathroom bears little resemblance to the space she started with.
Dark Countertops and a Large Mirror Defined the Original Bathroom

A large framed mirror stretched across the double vanity while dark countertops and chrome fixtures established the original look of the bathroom.
The layout already offered generous space, but most surfaces followed a standard builder-grade palette before paint, new fixtures, and custom details changed the room.
Black Grout Changed the Tile Pattern

Instead of replacing the white tile, Jessica painted the grout lines black using grout renew.
Dark joints emphasize the grid pattern across the tub surround and shower walls, creating contrast without changing the tile itself.
Chrome Shower Frame Received a Black Finish

Blue painter’s tape covered the surrounding glass while the chrome shower frame prepared for paint.
Rather than replacing the enclosure, Jessica spray-painted the frame black, creating one of the most noticeable changes in the room.
Barberry Paint Replaced the Original Vanity Finish

Benjamin Moore Barberry replaced the original vanity finish, introducing a muted red-violet tone that became one of the room’s most noticeable features.
Additional trim panels changed the appearance of the doors, while new hardware introduced a more custom look.
Round Mirrors Replaced the Builder Mirror

A large wall-to-wall mirror gave way to individual round mirrors above each sink, creating a more custom appearance along the vanity wall.
Black faucets, updated lighting, brass hardware, and propagation planters completed the transformation.
Floating Shelves Filled the Tub Wall

Wood shelves suspended from black leather straps added storage and display space above the bathtub.
Towels, framed artwork, candles, and plants turned an empty wall into one of the room’s focal points.
Glass Propagation Planters Filled an Empty Corner

Instead of adding another shelf, Jessica mounted glass propagation tubes on wood boards beside the vanity.
The display introduced greenery while occupying very little wall space.
Plants Became Part of the Bathroom Design

Hanging plants near the window and greenery throughout the room soften the contrast created by the black fixtures and grout.
Natural elements appear in nearly every finished photo of the space.
Black Fixtures Connected the Entire Room

Black faucets, shower framing, lighting, hardware, and accessories repeat throughout the bathroom.
Using the same finish across multiple elements helps connect the vanity, shower, and tub areas.
Before and After Shows the Impact of Paint

The bathroom footprint never changed. The shower enclosure remained in place, the tile stayed, and the vanity structure remained intact.

Instead of replacing major elements, Jessica used paint to transform the grout, shower frame, vanity, and walls. New mirrors, shelving, fixtures, and plant displays completed a makeover that changed the appearance of nearly every surface in the room.
Which update made the biggest impact: the black grout, black shower frame, or pink vanity?
