House by the Fjord: Built Into the Slope

A residence designed by OFFICE INAINN sits on the west coast of Norway, 148 meters above sea level. Completed in April 2025, the 127-square-meter home follows the steep slope without altering the ground. The dark timber structure blends with its surroundings and positions itself as part of the terrain rather than standing apart from it.

Two staggered volumes shape the house, creating different interior levels that mirror the hillside. The entrance runs along a narrow path between rocks, leading to a linear corridor that connects the rugged exterior with a calm interior. Each room offers views of the fjord, framed by trees and natural light.

Materials were chosen for their local character and tactile quality. Their role is to support the setting, not dominate it. Wood, stone, and natural finishes emphasize continuity with the site while keeping the focus on the views and the rhythm of daylight.

The project was built in collaboration with the client, who stressed the importance of regional ties. The guiding principle was to let nature lead the design, from concept through completion. OFFICE INAINN’s work reflects a Scandinavian approach focused on simplicity, function, and minimal intervention.
