Fisherman’s House in Cadaqués Transformed with Respect for History

Architects Bea Portabella and Jordi Pagès have restored a century-old fisherman’s house in the heart of Cadaqués, Spain. Once in near ruin, the home has been structurally reinforced and reimagined for modern living while preserving its original character.

Spread across four levels, the renovation opens up the layout for better light, air, and connection to the surrounding environment. The vaulted ground floor now serves as a flexible space, the main level contains the living areas, the second level holds private rooms, and the top floor features a terrace with sea views.

Materials like original ceramic tiles, lime-plastered walls, and iroko wood blend the vernacular with the contemporary. The façade was carefully preserved, maintaining the home’s identity and its place in the village’s historic streetscape.
