A Bird-Friendly Cabin in the Swedish Forest

Biosphere is a 34 m² treetop cabin designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) for the Treehotel in Harads, Sweden. Suspended among the pines and wrapped in 350 wooden birdhouses, the structure aims to support declining bird populations while offering a unique guest experience.

Built in collaboration with Swedish ornithologist Ulf Öhman, the cabin responds to the loss of natural nesting sites caused by forestry and climate shifts. The dense cluster of birdhouses on the facade serves as breeding habitats and helps strengthen the local biosphere.

A steel walkway leads to the black cube-like volume, camouflaged by the wooden boxes. Inside, a minimalist layout includes a large window facing the forest canopy. The result is a quiet retreat that engages with its surroundings in both function and form.
