Galgo House Blends Minimalism with Nature and Companionship

Image
Set within a lush residential complex in Brazil, Galgo House by Tati Tavares and Alex Dalcin Arquitetura is a weekend retreat that redefines minimal living. Originally envisioned as a functional kennel, the design evolved into a serene 290-square-meter home where the owners could relax and spend time with their whippets.  Constructed with concrete, steel, and wood, the architecture maintains a low profile, blending naturally into its environment. The layout embraces the outdoors through large openings and covered patios that blur the line between inside and out. A bold concrete portal frames the structure, while wooden brises and terracotta walls bring texture and warmth. The central volume houses a master suite, flanked by discreet guest rooms. Inside, the social areas flow into one another—a living room, dining space, and kitchen unified beneath an extended roofline. Outside, dedicated spaces for the dogs and a caretaker’s unit complete the layout, all designed to harmon...

Highlights from 3 Days of Design 2025 | Gestures of Home & Apartamento Secreto

Image
Last week I headed to Copenhagen for its annual 3 Days of Design festival, which sees showrooms, interiors brands and studios host exhibitions, talks, workshops and tours across the Danish capital. It’s free to attend and open to all (you certainly don’t need to be part of the design industry to go along), and I always come back brimming with inspiration . I’ll be sharing some of my highlights from this year’s event over the next couple of weeks, starting today with two collaborative exhibitions that took place within the walls of private members’ club The Conary: Gestures of Home and Apartamento Secreto . Gestures of Home Curated by interiors stylist Henriette Schou, Gestures of Home brought together creative studio and magazine publisher Openhouse , Australian rug maker Armadillo and European furniture companies Expormim and Saba Italia . The aim was to reimagine and challenge the boundaries between home and gallery by exploring how design can be both a form of artistic exp...

Minimalist Living Elevated: The White Line House by Nravil Architects

Image
Set against the stunning natural backdrop of Almaty, Kazakhstan, the White Line House by Nravil Architects is a striking expression of modern minimalism. Raised gently on stilts to preserve the existing terrain, this 300-square-meter residence embraces simplicity without sacrificing character. From every angle, the white sculptural form presents a unique profile. Angular yet elegant, the structure is wrapped in smooth white lime plaster, while expansive glass façades reflect the surrounding trees and sky—visually merging the home with its environment. The strategic use of energy-efficient glazing ensures both privacy and panoramic views, reinforcing a strong bond with nature. The all-white interior enhances light and space. Glossy marble floors and seamless lines run throughout the home, from the long corridor to the open-plan kitchen and the pared-down bedroom. Every element serves the goal of visual clarity, offering a calming retreat from visual noise. This project stands...

Compact Black Pavilion Unites Privacy and Proximity for Multigenerational Living

Image
i29 architects designed a compact 100 m² single-story residence on the same plot as an existing main home in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands. Meant for senior family members, the new house is both physically close to the main residence and strategically positioned to ensure privacy. The structure is covered by a pitched roof with integrated gutters and deep overhangs that form covered walkways. Inside, the open-plan layout is organized around a central patio that brings in daylight and views. Three large sliding doors blur the line between interior and exterior, expanding the living area outward during warmer seasons. The north side of the house is reserved for sleeping and bathing, offering quiet and seclusion. Materials were chosen to create a calm, unified environment: a light gray concrete floor, oak-clad walls, and a white-painted ceiling with exposed rafters. Custom cabinetry and built-ins follow clean horizontal lines, reinforcing the architectural simplicity. The resul...
